Bringing Beauty Home: Why I Design for the Modern Home

by Kelly Shipley, Surface & Textile Designer at Dig’n Designs

If there’s one place I believe deserves our fullest attention, our gentlest care, and our most meaningful beauty.....It’s Home.

Home is more than where we rest. It’s where we remember who we are. It’s the quiet backdrop to our best conversations, our hardest days, and our warmest moments. And when we take the time to shape it with intention, it begins to shape us right back.

The Heart Behind My Work

Every design I create is rooted in one simple hope: to help people love the space they’re living in.

I design with the modern home in mind, not just modern in style, but modern in spirit. That means recognizing that today’s homes are filled with both chaos and comfort, busy mornings and slow afternoons, bold personalities and gentle, sacred spaces. My work is created to meet those moments with beauty, calm, and connection.

From throw blankets and soft home goods to patterned pillows and timeless wallpaper and fabric, each product is designed to do more than decorate. It’s meant to anchor, soften, and quietly inspire.

Design That Means Something

I’ve never been interested in chasing trends. I’m much more drawn to creating pieces that feel familiar yet fresh—designs that spark a memory, tell a story, or simply make a room feel right.

Your home should reflect you, not just what’s in style. That’s why I gravitate toward gentle palettes, natural textures, and patterns that feel rooted in nostalgia, warmth, and comfort. Whether you’re styling a nursery, refreshing a reading nook, or adding a soft detail to your kitchen, I hope you’ll find something here that feels like it belongs in your story.

✨ A Simple Tip to Try: The “Signature Soft Spot”

One of the easiest ways to create a home you truly feel good in is to carve out what I call a “Signature Soft Spot.”
It could be a chair by the window, your bed, or even a quiet corner on the floor.  What matters most is what you add to it.

Layer in a few personal touches:

  • A patterned throw that makes you feel something (peaceful, energized, nostalgic, whatever you need)

  • A small stack of books or a favorite notebook

  • A candle or diffuser scent you love

  • A pillow or wall print that holds meaning

It’s a tiny shift, but it becomes a signal to your brain that this is your place to reset, to feel inspired, or just to be.

Whether your home is big, small, messy, minimal, or in transition, adding a few meaningful layers can change everything about how it feels to live there.

Why I Design for the Home

There’s something deeply special about designing for the space where people gather, rest, and grow. That’s why I’ve chosen to focus my creative energy on home and living products. Pieces that don’t just sit in a room but live with you.

I think the best kind of design is the kind you come back to over and over again.  The print on your favorite blanket, the wallpaper that catches the morning light just right. That’s the kind of beauty I want to help you create in your own space.

Follow Along with Me

I’m always working on new patterns, thoughtful collections, and helpful ways to bring more beauty, comfort, and intention into your everyday spaces. If this resonates with you, I’d love for you to follow along on Instagram or sign up for my newsletter. It’s where I share new designs, styling ideas, and little reminders that your home deserves to feel as wonderful as you are.

Because at the end of the day, design should do more than fill a space.  It should feel like home.

Warmly,
Kelly
