What Colors Go With Sage Green? My Designer's Guide for 2027

The short answer: Sage green pairs beautifully with warm, earthy colors. My favorite partners are creamy ivory, terracotta, blush pink, warm gold, natural wood, and soft navy. Because sage sits right between green and gray, it calms bold colors and warms up quiet ones, which makes it one of the easiest colors to build a whole home around.
Now, let me tell you why I love it so much.
Sage has been a favorite of mine for as long as I've been designing. It's the color of dried herbs hanging in a farmhouse kitchen, of eucalyptus in a mason jar, of the faded shutters on a cottage you wish you lived in. It feels like a deep breath.
When I built the color palette for Dig'n Designs, sage was one of the very first colors I chose. It sits at the heart of so many of my patterns because it plays so well with others. And it turns out I'm in very good company, because sage and its green cousins are about to have their biggest year yet.
Why 2027 is the year of green
If you've noticed green everywhere lately, you're not imagining it. Four of the biggest paint brands chose a green as their 2027 Color of the Year:
- Dulux / AkzoNobel – Soulful Sage: a soft, silvery sage chosen to make homes feel lighter and more restful.
- Sherwin-Williams – Celery: a pale, fresh green picked to reflect our longing for balance, wellness, and connection.
- Behr – Grounded: an earthy olive that drifts between olive and moss, with a whisper of brown underneath.
- Benjamin Moore – Webster Green HC-130: a heritage green pulled from their Historical Color Collection.
The common thread is a longing for homes that feel restorative, rooted, and close to nature. That's exactly what sage has always offered. The difference now is that the rest of the design world is catching up.
What I love most is how these trend colors tell us what goes with sage. Dulux pairs Soulful Sage with warm earth tones and even a touch of lilac. Graham & Brown chose a dusty pink called Rose Earth for 2027. Valspar went with Cottage Door, a soft gray-blue. Put those together and you have a sage palette that is warm, a little romantic, and completely timeless.
9 colors that go with sage green
Here are my favorite pairings, starting with the five colors in my own Dig'n Designs palette. I've included the hex codes I use so you can match them for paint, fabric, or your own creative projects.
1. Warm cream (#F8F3EE)
This is the easiest, most forgiving partner for sage. Cream keeps sage feeling soft and airy, where stark bright white can make it look cold. Think cream walls with sage cabinets, or sage walls with creamy linen curtains.
2. Terracotta (#A97D6F)
Sage and terracotta are opposites on the color wheel in the loveliest way. One is cool and leafy, the other warm and earthy, like a potted herb on a sunny windowsill. Use terracotta in clay pots, a rug, or throw pillows against sage walls.
3. Blush pink (#E9D6CD)
This is my romantic pairing. Blush softens sage and brings a cottage-garden sweetness that never feels too girly. It's beautiful in bedrooms, nurseries, and powder rooms.
4. Warm gold (#B9925B)
Gold is sage's jewelry. Brass hardware, an antique mirror, or a golden pattern detail instantly makes sage feel elevated and a little bit vintage.
5. Sage on sage (my sage is #8A9A7E)
Layering lighter and deeper greens is one of 2027's biggest looks. Try a pale sage wall with olive velvet or a deeper green pattern. The tonal layering feels calm and collected, never boring.
6. Natural wood and rattan
Honey oak, walnut, woven baskets, and rattan are the warmth sage craves. If a sage room feels flat, wood is almost always the missing piece.
7. Soft navy and gray-blue
A quiet blue, like Valspar's Cottage Door, gives sage a classic, collected-over-time feeling. Try navy in a striped pillow or a painted island.
8. Lilac and lavender
This is the surprise pairing for 2027. A whisper of lilac with sage feels like a spring garden. Use it sparingly, in a vase of flowers, a pattern accent, or a throw.
9. Charcoal and black accents
A little black in picture frames, iron curtain rods, or light fixtures gives sage definition and keeps it from feeling washed out.
A color to use carefully: cool, blue-toned gray. It can fight with sage's warmth and make a room feel dull. If you love gray, choose a warm greige instead.

How to use sage pairings, room by room
Kitchen: Sage cabinets with warm cream walls, brass hardware, and butcher-block counters. Add terracotta in a vintage rug or a bowl of clementines, and it feels like an old farmhouse that's been loved for generations.
Living room: Let sage be your "new neutral" on the walls, then layer in wood, linen, and one warm accent color like terracotta or gold. A patterned pillow or throw that pulls all of those colors together is what makes the room feel finished.
Bedroom: Sage with blush and cream is pure calm. Try sage bedding or an accent wall, blush sheets, and a little gold in a lamp or frame.
Bathroom or powder room: This is the perfect place to be brave. A sage-and-blush floral wallpaper in a small powder room is a joyful surprise every time you open the door.
Home office: Green is said to help with focus, so a sage wall behind your desk is a lovely idea. Pair it with wood shelves and navy or charcoal accents to keep it grounded.
My rule of three: Choose sage plus one warm color and one neutral. For example, sage + terracotta + cream, or sage + blush + gold. Then repeat those three colors at least three times around the room. That repetition is what makes a space feel intentional instead of accidental.
The easiest way to get the palette right: let a pattern do it
Here's my little designer secret. The fastest way to pull sage and its partners together is to start with a pattern that already holds them all. When I design a collection, I spend hours balancing those colors so they live happily together. A wallpaper, pillow, or throw becomes your road map, and you simply pull paint and accents from the colors inside it.
A few of my designs that bring sage home beautifully:
- Cream & Sage Wildflower Wallpaper – Neutral Floral
- Olive Green Wildflower Wallpaper – Cottagecore Floral
Every wallpaper comes in Peel & Stick, Luxe Peel & Stick, and Luxe Traditional, so you can choose what suits your walls (and your renter's agreement). I always suggest ordering a sample first, so you can see how the sage reads in your own light.
If you love mixing more than one pattern, my guide The Art of Layering Pattern walks you through pairing florals, stripes, and small prints without the room feeling busy.

Sage green questions I hear most
Is sage green still in style for 2027?
Yes. Dulux named Soulful Sage its 2027 Color of the Year, and Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and Benjamin Moore all chose greens too. Sage has moved from trend to timeless neutral.
What is the best accent color for sage green?
Terracotta is my favorite for warmth, and blush is my favorite for softness. For a subtle accent, warm gold or brass is always beautiful.
Does sage green go with gray?
It can, but choose a warm greige instead of a cool blue-gray. Cool grays tend to make sage look dull.
What white goes best with sage green?
A warm cream or soft ivory. Bright, cool whites can make sage feel cold and clinical.
Does sage green go with wood tones?
Beautifully. Oak, walnut, pine, and rattan all bring out the warmth in sage. Wood is often the missing piece in a sage room.
What is the difference between sage and olive green?
Sage is lighter, softer, and grayer, like dried herbs. Olive is deeper and more yellow-brown, like Behr's 2027 color Grounded. They look lovely layered together.
Is sage green a warm or cool color?
Sage sits in between. Its gray undertone makes it gently cool, while its yellow-green base keeps it warm. That balance is why it pairs with so many colors.
Bringing it home
Sage has a way of making a house feel like it's exhaling. Whether you paint one wall, add a single patterned pillow, or wrap a whole powder room in florals, it's a color that welcomes you in and asks you to stay a while.
If you're dreaming up a sage room for the new year, I'd love to be part of it. Wander through my sage-toned patterns, order a sample or two, and see how they glow in your own light.
